The Victorian character of this new custom home fronts an integrated system of super-high performance 21st century features. The ENERGY STAR combination of passive solar Insulated Concrete Form (ICF) construction, heating/cooling and energy recovery ventilator (ERV) systems, lighting package, and appliances is demonstrating a 66.3% reduction in overall utility costs, compared to similarly sized conventional homes. This all-electric house is oriented and wired for an owner-upgrade to photovoltaic (solar) power, an investment to further cut utility bills.
Architect Greg Polanik has designed this compact home with a flow of open, abundantly daylit living spaces to foster both conviviality and privacy. Beyond typical sustainable features, the home meets all Accessibility Guidelines of the ADA to support lifestyle quality for residents of any age and degree of ability.
Fixtures, building materials and other products were regionally sourced to minimize energy consumed in transportation and support local economies. FSC certified red oak flooring was produced by Pioneer Forest in south-central Missouri. Low-VOC paints, stains and adhesives were used throughout the house.
Water conservation is a top priority, accomplished through rain barrels and front and rear native plant rain gardens designed to capture and use runoff from the roof and all pavements. Plumbing fixture flow rates include: shower, 2.0 gallons per minute (gpm); faucets, 0.5 gpm; and toilets, 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf).
Congratulations to Applied Energy Solutions, LLC, for earning top-level LEED-Platinum and ENERGY STAR 5-Star Plus ratings, attesting to superior quality of construction processes and building performance in this Jefferson County home.
