This custom home demonstrates the Sage Homebuilders commitment to high performance in high design. Behind the charming cottage façade, modern super-efficient features include extensive automated controls of ENERGY STAR lighting and appliances, energy recovery ventilator (ERV), PEX plumbing of water-conserving Kohler fixtures—even automatic LED nightlights.

Solar panels mounted on the south-facing rear roof generate most of the home’s electricity, using “near zero” energy from the conventional power grid. A backup battery for power outages is also solar powered. Sun Tunnel™ skylights bring daylight into enclosed rooms.

Architect Jeff Day has designed both efficient open living space and cozy nooks for privacy. Interior features include: custom cabinetry; solid surface countertops; stained wood trim and solid-core wood doors; two stone fireplaces; wool carpeting; built-in benches, desk and mudroom lockers.

Exterior features include masonry and stained fiber-cement siding on all sides of the home, 50-year architectural shingles, and copper accents. Natural stone compliments low-maintenance native plant landscaping and a permeable pavement driveway on the partially wooded acre lot. A creek bed and view of the lake in adjacent Conway Park enhance the natural setting.

Sage Homebuilders has earned GBI-Gold certification for this house from the St. Louis Homebuilders Association, and is seeking LEED-Gold certification. This home is featured in the American Solar Energy Society’s 2008 National Solar Homes Tour (www.nationalsolartour.org).
